As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to evolve, it has also transformed how cybercriminals operate, giving rise to AI-based ransomware that is more sophisticated and harder to detect. In response, cybersecurity teams are adapting their strategies to defend against these advanced threats, with a renewed focus on proactive security measures.
At the mWISE 2024 conference, cybersecurity experts discussed the increasing role AI plays in ransomware attacks and how businesses can bolster their defenses. John Fokker, head of threat intelligence at Trellix, explained that organizations need to take a more proactive approach to security, tailoring their defense strategies to specific industry threats. "Our goal is to elevate intelligence so that companies can stay ahead of attackers," Fokker stated. By identifying sector-specific vulnerabilities, Trellix helps businesses apply targeted security rules to mitigate risk.
Trellix has observed a significant rise in Ransomware as a Service (RaaS), where threat actors collaborate to exploit AI tools. These tools, like Gemini, are used to discover vulnerabilities, web scanners, and even deepfakes. One particularly concerning instance involved threat actors utilizing voice-cloning software to extort politicians and cryptocurrency influencers.
Collaboration is becoming essential in combating these evolving threats. Trellix has partnered with Google to share insights and research into imminent dangers facing organizations and governments. According to Fokker, joint investigations and the delivery of Trellix appliances have been key in defending against international attacks on underfunded nations.
For businesses looking to safeguard against AI-driven ransomware, Fokker advises adopting a holistic approach: "Asset management, patch management, and understanding the threat landscape are basic but crucial elements in improving security posture."
As AI continues to fuel more complex cyberattacks, companies must stay vigilant and continuously assess their security infrastructure to protect against the ever-evolving threat landscape.
