Summary

Fort Wright Mayor Dave Hatter has called on Kentucky lawmakers to prioritize statewide cybersecurity measures, suggesting that Ohio's comprehensive security efforts could serve as a model. With cyberattacks on the rise, targeting both public and private networks, Hatter emphasized the urgency of adopting robust cybersecurity strategies.

Hatter, who is also a cybersecurity expert at Cincinnati-based Intrust IT, presented his case to the legislative information technology oversight board on Wednesday. He highlighted Ohio's "whole government approach" to combating cyber threats, which includes the formation of the Ohio Cyber Collaboration Committee (OC3). This initiative brings together public, private, military, and educational sectors to strengthen cybersecurity infrastructure.

The OC3 has established the Ohio Cyber Range, a virtual environment dedicated to cybersecurity training and technology development. Hatter urged Kentucky to consider a similar initiative, noting the potential benefits for the state's critical infrastructure, which spans 120 counties and over 400 cities.

The OC3 aims to mitigate malware attacks in Ohio through collaborative cybersecurity testing, training programs, workforce development, improved governance, and public awareness. Hatter believes that adopting such a model could significantly enhance Kentucky's cybersecurity posture.
