Comcast announced that it had restored internet service to 86% of its Florida customers who were affected by Hurricane Milton, but many Treasure Coast homes and businesses still lacked access to Internet and WiFi services as of Monday.
Customers in Indian River, St. Lucie, and Martin counties, who depend on Xfinity for Wi-Fi and data, may continue to experience outages. The company’s latest storm response update, posted on Sunday, indicated that ongoing power outages are contributing to the delays in restoring internet connectivity in some areas.
Comcast officials confirmed that their network in the Treasure Coast area sustained damage from tornadoes prior to Hurricane Milton’s landfall. Technicians have been working with power restoration teams to repair and replace damaged equipment. While crews restored service late Sunday, further disruptions occurred Monday morning due to damage caused by a third-party contractor. Comcast expects services to resume shortly.
Even if power has returned to a home, it’s possible that the local Xfinity network may still be without electricity. Technicians can only begin repairs on the network once power is restored to both the home and the network. As of Monday morning, approximately 6,430 customers in the tri-county region remained without power, a significant drop from the 40,180 customers still affected on Saturday.
Once power is restored, Comcast advises customers to restart their devices, such as modems and routers, to re-establish connections. For real-time updates, customers can visit Comcast’s service interruption page and enter their address to get more details on the status of their service.
Last week, Comcast opened more than 362,000 Xfinity WiFi hotspots across Florida. These hotspots are free and accessible to everyone, including non-Xfinity customers, but are only available in areas with power.
Additionally, Comcast is offering a ‘natural disaster pause’ for customers displaced by Hurricane Milton. This option allows users to temporarily halt their service and billing for up to six months. To activate the pause, customers can visit Comcast’s Natural Disaster Customer Recovery Plan page or call 1-800-XFINITY. Services will resume once the home’s connectivity is fully restored.
