Summary
ADT, a major player in the home security industry, has confirmed that it recently suffered a cyberattack that resulted in the exposure of certain customer data. While the company has not disclosed the exact timing of the breach, it revealed that the attackers gained access to databases containing sensitive customer information, including home addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers.
In a regulatory filing released late Wednesday, ADT reassured customers that there is “no reason to believe” that the breach compromised the functionality of their home security systems. However, the company did not provide details on how it reached this conclusion. ADT described the impact of the breach as affecting a "small percentage" of its customers but did not specify the exact number.
As of June 2024, ADT reported having a customer base of six million. The breach disclosure comes shortly after a post appeared on a notorious cybercrime forum on July 31, in which a seller claimed to have obtained over 30,000 customer records from ADT. TechCrunch, which reported the incident, was unable to independently verify these claims.
Sarah Bellinger, an ADT spokesperson via a third-party agency, declined to provide further details on the breach.
ADT, one of the largest home security providers in the United States, is currently owned by private equity firm Apollo Global Management.
