Microsoft Is the Leading Target in Phishing Scams
New research from Check Point Research (CPR) highlights that Microsoft remains the most frequently impersonated company in phishing scams, with WhatsApp, Instagram, and Adidas also making it into the top 10 list.
Phishing Trends and Statistics
According to CPR’s findings for the second quarter of 2024, Microsoft is imitated in 57% of phishing attempts. Apple has moved up to the second spot, accounting for 10% of phishing messages. New entrants like Instagram, WhatsApp, and Adidas collectively make up 2.3% of these threats.
Targeted Industries and Common Scams
The tech industry remains the primary target for phishing scams due to the sensitive information these companies often handle, including financial and personal data. Common tactics used by cybercriminals involve fabricating threats to devices, prompting users to download fraudulent protection software, or using ‘Message Failure Delivery’ notices to lure users to fake login pages.
Apple impersonators frequently claim that a user's Apple ID has been locked or compromised, directing users to a fake login page to steal credentials. Retail-based phishing scams often mimic purchasing sites to trick users into entering their payment details.
How to Stay Safe from Phishing Attacks
Phishing attacks are designed to create a sense of urgency, tricking users into quickly following fraudulent instructions. Omer Dembinsky, Data Group Manager at Check Point Software, emphasizes the importance of vigilance: avoid clicking on unsolicited links, verify email addresses thoroughly, and use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).
