X, the popular social media platform, has introduced an update to its block feature that enables blocked users to view public posts, sparking concerns among its user base. Although blocked users are still restricted from following, interacting with, or messaging those who have blocked them, they can now view their followers and following lists. This shift in policy has led to widespread debate, with users questioning the implications for privacy and safety.
Previously, X’s support page explicitly stated that blocked users could not access the followers and following lists of those who blocked them. However, this reference has been removed, reflecting the latest policy adjustments.
X’s justification for the update focuses on transparency, claiming that the block feature was sometimes used to conceal or selectively share harmful information. However, this rationale has not been well-received, especially given that users already have the option to make their accounts private to control information sharing. Critics argue that this change may lead to an increase in stalking and harassment, undermining user safety.
Tech advocate Tracy Chou, who created an app to help automate blocking, shared her thoughts on the issue, emphasizing that despite users' ability to circumvent blocks by creating new accounts, every bit of added friction helps. "Making it easy for the creeper to creep is not a good thing," she said in a recent post on X.
