In an effort to capture a larger audience, the social music-sharing app Popster is rolling out two major features: an AI-powered image generator for cover art and a remix tool that lets artists collaborate on each other's videos.
Popster, which launched last year as a platform for creating songs and music videos, allows artists to interact, produce original content, and share it on social media. Users can record videos and voiceovers directly within the app, add stickers and colorful backgrounds, and apply in-house developed vocal effects. The app also features a community section where artists can connect.
Joining the generative AI trend, Popster offers tools for generating lyrics and creating beats to accompany vocal recordings. One standout feature, powered by OpenAI, is the "Add a Beat" option. Artists can choose a genre like Lofi Hip Hop or Indie Pop and select a vibe to generate a backtrack. This tool uses Mubert’s library of royalty-free tracks, setting Popster apart from competitors like Udio and Suno, which have faced legal issues for allegedly using copyrighted music without permission.
“The challenge with AI in music is ensuring originality and creativity,” explained Popster co-founder and CEO Themis Drakonakis. “We aim to position AI as a creative partner for artists, helping them explore new sounds and ideas.”
Popster’s latest addition, the "Albums" feature, allows artists to generate custom cover art using AI. By entering a prompt, artists can create images that serve as overlays on their short-form videos, adding a sophisticated touch to their content.
Additionally, Popster introduces a new "Mashup" feature, similar to TikTok’s “Stitch” and “Duet” tools. This allows artists to remix and collaborate by recording their own videos alongside existing ones, fostering creative collaboration.
Although Popster is still growing, with a user base of a few thousand, it has already seen nearly 10,000 original songs created on its platform. Users spend an average of 1.5 hours daily on the app.
The startup, co-founded by Drakonakis and CTO Sotiris Kaniras, previously launched apps like Nup, Self’it, and UniPad. Popster has raised $280,000 from the Realize Tech Fund and is currently seeking additional pre-seed funding to expand its team and improve its video server. Future plans include introducing paid features and partnering with music labels.
